TBA

It's all about the TASTE! Food culture and graphic design blend together in this unique summer study. Find inspiration and nourishment – literally and metaphorically – as we explore food from garden to table, participate in cooking classes and then share in cooking responsibilities, enjoy the simple pleasures of communal conversations around the dining table (no cell phones allowed) extended to the evening campfire. Explore the culinary delights on road trips around middle Tennessee from BBQ to Food Truck culture from Memphis to Nashville and small towns in between. Document your experiences in a visual narrative, exploring Designer as Author. Produce portfolio quality projects all about food – from branding to restaurant design, food truck design, food festival posters, packaging, and more. Session will include conversations with a designer in this discipline and food photographer. Receive design coaching and mentorship.

Limited to 7 participants. Create, commune, cook, explore, spend time by the campfire all at our retreat center in rural Tennessee. Recreational activities may include kayaking, canoeing, hiking and other outdoors activities. Participants must bring laptop and have current Adobe software installed.

EXPLORER & TIME TRAVELER: Graphic Design History
dates to be announced
* a condensed version of this workshop available for college student groups, can potentially be scheduled for spring break

Earn a time-traveler and explorer badges for your investigation of Graphic Design History. For the love of learning and the connection to the foundations of your passions, this alternative to summer study abroad will provide practical investigation and engaging discourse with the creation of design artifacts that reinforce your critical thinking skills. You must commit to reading the course material, but you won't be tested to earn your badge. Toss out that anxiety over grades and receive coaching/mentorship on your work. Participate in group discussions as we examine design history, integrate your research as a time-traveler into a design project. Spend a lazy summer day in the field, woods, on the porch, in a hammock reading a piece of literature that will relate to graphic design, participate in a book discussion, explore visual rhetoric in your creative brainstorming to redesign that book cover. Participate in a scavenger hunt for design ephemera as we pick through area antique and thrift stores scouring for design inspiration for a visual narrative project, and we'll spend a half-day at the pinnacle of scavenging at the Nashville flea market. A time traveler will not miss a visit to Hatch Show Print.

Limited to 14 participants. Create, commune, cook, explore, spend time by the campfire all at our retreat center in rural Tennessee. Recreational activities may include kayaking, canoeing, hiking and other outdoors activities. Participants must bring laptop and have current Adobe software installed.
